Higher Education

Jefferson Government Relations, LLC (Jefferson) represents schools in virtually every category of higher education: large research universities, undergraduate colleges, historically black colleges and universities as well as private career institutions.

We actively assist these schools through:

  • Annual, discretionary earmarks through the federal appropriations process;
  • Policy revisions to the Higher Education Act of 1965 (HEA) and other underlying postsecondary education statue; and
  • Regulatory guidance and/or representation with the Department of Education.

At Jefferson, we work on policy issues of general interest to the higher education community such as the authorization of direct aid and student loan programs. We have successfully advanced issues of concern to specific groups of schools, for example, those affecting medical teaching hospitals. We strive to achieve the specific objectives of our client institutions ranging from participation in federal programs to federal support for research by individual faculty, university departments and institutes, to direct federal assistance for other institutional purposes.

Working with our education clients we have obtained millions of dollars in funding from both federal and private programs. We have helped to enact policy revisions to the HEA that have benefited client institutions and their students while preserving program integrity and protecting the federal fiscal interest, and conducted meetings and negotiated settlements with the Department of Education on regulatory compliance issues of importance to our clients.

Whatever the challenge, Jefferson has a consistent record of success in realizing the goals of higher education.
