Hospitals

As Medicare and Medicaid reimbursement rates shift, and increased federal funds are being made available for health care research, hospitals can gain a great deal by participating in the federal legislative and rule-making process. Jefferson Government Relations, LLC (Jefferson) has experience representing hospitals, and our team members have the relationships with policymakers with whom we can put hospital administrators in contact to achieve a hospital's goals in the federal arena.

We assist clients in determining which of their needs can be met through federal programs or through shifts in federal policy. We have achieved positive outcomes in both the appropriations and authorization phases of legislation, and can help identify how best to attack a hospital's specific needs. Our work with, and understanding of, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS, formerly HCFA), other key federal agencies and Congressional committees of relevant jurisdiction allow our clients to navigate the federal arena as we work together toward a desired outcome.

Jefferson's successes in this area include:

    • On behalf of a rural, non-profit hospital, legislative Medicare geographic reclassification procedures were modified to permit a hospital located in a rural county surrounded by hospitals deemed urban to also be reimbursed at urban rates. The estimated increase in Medicare reimbursement was $1.5 million per year.
